Sue Katheryn Smith

Sue Katheryn Smith of Hammond, LA, passed away on August 17, 2024, at the age of 80. Born in San Antonio, TX, on February 29, 1944, she grew up in Hammond, graduating from Southeastern Lab High School. As a young girl, she lived in Germany with her family as her father served in the Army during the rebuilding of the country after WW2. For the last seven years, she has lived at Summerfield Assisted Living. Sue Katheryn completed degrees at both SLU and LSU. She retired as Lieutenant Commander from the United States Navy and was stationed in various locations, including Hawaii. After her retirement, she worked with the Louisiana DEQ in Baton Rouge until she retired from there as well. Her major focus was on waterways. Sue was a very talented woman with many skills including needlecraft, technology, genealogy, and music. She was a devout Catholic who was active in her church. After the flood of 2016 that destroyed her home in Baton Rouge, she then moved back to Hammond. 

Sue is survived by her brother William “Will” Smith from Tucson, AZ, and two nephews: Kevin Smith from Tucson, AZ, and William “Billy” Smith (Marcella) from Baton Rouge, LA. 

She was preceded in death by her parents John Golden Smith and Eunice Ard Smith. 

Sue Katheryn’s family would like to thank everyone at Summerfield Assisted Living in Hammond for their attention and compassion toward Sue. The administrators were always aware of Sue’s needs; their doors were always open. The caregivers and other staff members who worked with Sue tirelessly day after day provided outstanding care. They were always professional, patient, and caring. The family is deeply grateful for their empathy and skill. 

Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond, on Friday, August 23, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in New Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery in Husser.
