Sidney Douglas Cowart, Jr.

Sidney Douglas Cowart Jr. tragically passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, in Crystal Springs, Mississippi at the age of 82. He was born on March 24, 1944, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Sidney Douglas Cowart Sr. and Thelma Wolf Cowart. He was a graduate of Baton Rouge High where he was a star athlete, and he continued his education at Southeastern Louisiana University. His career began with him serving in the United States Army as a Communications Specialist and served in Vietnam where he received the Vietnam Service Medal with 3 bronze stars. Sidney Cowart was a resident of Tickfaw, Louisiana and retired with Turner Construction.

Sid was a kind, cheerful, and genuinely friendly man who never met a stranger. His warm smile and easygoing nature made people feel welcome, and he had a way of making friends wherever he went. He found joy in the simple things-being outside, working with his hands, and taking pride in his home. As a father, he believed in raising his children to have strong values and high standards. Though life and distance sometimes separated him from his children, he never allowed that distance to diminish the bond they shared. He never missed an opportunity to pick up the phone and call, staying connected and letting them know they were loved and never far from his thoughts. When retirement gave him more time to pursue his interests, he discovered a true love for woodworking. He could spend countless hours in his backyard shop, tinkering, creating, and building whatever his imagination could dream up. There was always something to work on, something to fix, or a new project taking shape. Every now and then, he would make a trip to the casino, not necessarily because he was a gambler, but because he knew it made his beloved wife, Josie, happy when he would sit beside her and play the slots. Those moments together were a reflection of the love and companionship they shared. Above all, he cherished his family. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and treasured every opportunity to be a part of their lives. His family was a source of great pride and joy, and the love he gave them will remain with them always.

Mr. Cowart is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Mrs. Josephine Cowart; his sons, Sidney Douglas Cowart III and his wife Daina of Ridgeland, MS, David Cowart and his wife Hope of Garden Ridge, TX, he was also a father in every way that mattered to Paige Ropac and Susan Marshall Kliebert; his grandchildren, Ashton Cowart (Olivia Nixon), Brandon Nicholson (Angie), Peyton Cowart (Kelsey), Morgan Giacumakis (Bryce), Hunter Kliebert, and Holly Kliebert; his great grandchildren Mason, Avery, Emmy, and Tatum; his sisters, Thelma Herthum and Linda White (Rip); his sisters-in law, Mary L. Parent and Lucy L. Sticker; his brother-in-law, Michael Sticker, and his numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Sidney Cowart Sr. and Thelma Cowart; his sister Katherine Fussell; and his brother-in-law, Harold Herthum.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd. Hammond, LA 70401 with visitation beginning at 9:00 AM, followed by service beginning at 11:00 AM, officiated by Deacon Al Levy.

Interment will follow at Pompeii Cemetery in Tickfaw, Louisiana. Services will conclude after the burial as The Cowart family wishes to hold a reception at a later date.
