Shirley Ann Gordon Hidalgo peacefully passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2025, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at the age of 77. Shirley came from a big Mississippi family, where she learned to take care of her younger siblings, pick cotton, and cook delicious county dishes, especially her famous cornbread and chitterlings. She was a beautiful soul that would do anything for anyone, an absolute sweetheart that you couldn't help but fall in love with as soon as you met her. Her family expressed that she would take in any animal, big or small, in need of a loving home. She was a country girl who loved being outside whether it was fishing, taking care of her doggies, watching the hummingbirds and cardinals flutter by, taking care of her chickens (she named her favorite, Ms. Gordon), and could skin a rabbit in under 3 minutes. When she wasn't outside you could find her crocheting a beautiful piece, watching her man, John Wayne and any other cowboy movies, dancing to swamp pop and country music, playing bingo or trying her shot at the casino with her sisters. She was known for being a trickster, sharing old wives tales or narrating a captivating story. Most than anything else, she loved her family and spending time with them making lasting memories they will cherish forever. Shirley was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to all who knew her and is already deeply missed.
Shirley leaves behind her sons, James William McGee, Paul Eugene Brasel and Dwayne J. Hidalgo Sr.; sisters, Ruth Gordon Fortiner and Polly Leona Gordon; brothers, Oscar Lee Gordon and Pat Gordon; grandchildren, Dwayne J. Hidalgo Jr., Shelly Workman, PJ Gross, Josh Brasel, Dillion Brasel, Curtis James McGee, Johnny Ray Brasel, Brandon Brasel, Corey Brasel, Jon Brasel and Cody Brasel; 12 great-grandchildren; pet chicken, Ms. Gordon; dogs, Pee-Wee, Christmas, and Roscoe; grand-furbabies, Bandit, Bowie, Buttercup; and Donkey Kong the cat.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Lily Leona Gordon and Walter James Gordon; son, Roger Dale Brasel; grandsons, Alexander Joseph Hidalgo and Roger Brasel; siblings, Walter Gordon, Paul Gordon, Joe Gordon, Billy Gordon, twins- Bobby and Charlie Gordon; Mary Jane Gordon Self and Martha Mae Gordon Briggs.
