Sarah Cook Mitchell passed away peacefully on Monday, July 20, 2020 at the age of 88. She was born on April 29, 1932, in Grand Cane, Louisiana, the daughter of the late William C. Cook and the late Ettrice Huckabay Cook.

Sarah lived much of her life in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, where she raised her children and was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church. As a first grade teacher, she championed the Head Start program and special education. Outside of her career, she enjoyed painting, playing the piano, reading, dancing, and watching all sports. Over the years, Sarah volunteered for various organizations including North Oaks Medical Center and First United Methodist Church. Above everything, she cherished the time she spent with her family and friends.

Sarah is survived by her four children, Michael C. Mitchell, Christie M. Faugot and her husband Jay, Sarah E. Mitchell, and Karen M. Romero and her husband John; her grandchildren, Haven & Rayna Mitchell-Rose, Mitchell, Hunter & Elyse Faugot, and William & Parker Romero; her brothers, Lodwrick M. Cook and William H. Cook and his wife Joyce; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Sarah was preceded in death by her loving husband, Willard McRaney "Mac" Mitchell; sister, Billye Faye Herring and her husband Bo; and sister-in-law, Carole Cook.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to all of Sarah's compassionate caregivers at Oak Park Village Assisted Living in Hammond especially Cathy Johnston. A special thank you to her longtime caregiver, who Sarah thought of as her own daughter, Nancy Booth.

Family and friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd, Hammond, Louisiana 70401, on Friday, July 24th from 9:00 am until 11:00 am.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday at Harry McKneely & Son - Hammond, with Chaplain Keith Kincaid officiating.

Interment will follow at Wetmore Cemetery in Ponchatoula, Louisiana.

Face masks are mandatory to attend any visitation or service. Thank you for your cooperation.
