Sam Joseph Dorsa, age 98, passed away peacefully in Hammond, Louisiana at North Oaks Medical Center on May 11, 2026. He was born on September 21, 1927, in Tickfaw, Louisiana, to Joseph and Mary Gebbia Dorsa.
Sam was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great‑grandfather whose life was grounded in faith, family, and service to others. He has been preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rose Pittaro Dorsa, with whom he shared 75 years of marriage, as well as his parents, his two brothers, Joseph Dorsa (wife Ann) and John Dorsa. He is also preceded in death by his half-sister, Lena Mae Macalluso Amato.
He is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Charles Dorsa and wife Susan, and Brian Samuel Dorsa and wife Tiffani. He was a proud grandfather to Steven Dorsa (wife Alex), Amanda Dorsa, Autumn Dorsa, and Kirsten Dorsa, and a cherished great‑grandfather to Wyatt Dorsa, Emmett Dorsa, Emelia Dorsa, Madden Reed, Marshall Reed, Memphis Reed, and Miles Reed.
Sam held a deep and unwavering commitment to his Catholic faith, which guided him throughout his life. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Lions Club and lived his faith through quiet service, loyalty, and love for his family.
A proud veteran, Sam served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1947 with the rank of Technician Fifth Grade, serving with the 4106 ASU Detachment #1 Station Hospital and received the World War II Victory medal.
Sam spent his working years with dedication and integrity. He was employed by Jax Brewery for 23 years as a warehouse supervisor in New Orleans, later served with the United States Postal Service for 20 years, and following retirement, he remained active by selling real estate.
Known for his love of cooking, Sam brought family together through food and tradition. His famous Christmas roast was especially beloved and remains a treasured memory for those who gathered around his table.
Visitation will be held at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd, Hammond, Louisiana on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with interment to follow at Rose Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Diane and Jerry Correjolles for their unwavering support and love, and to the compassionate caregivers at Phoenix Assisted Living in Hammond, Louisiana, who cared for Sam during his time there-particularly nurse Tammy, who held a special place in his heart.
