It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Samuel Weir (Sonny), who departed this life on Monday, October 28, 2024, in Covington, Louisiana, at the age of 82. Born on July 30, 1942, in Meridian, Mississippi, Sonny was the cherished son of the late Sylvia Wilcher Weir and the late Irby Weir. A beloved resident of Hammond, Louisiana, he leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and devotion.
Sonny grew up in rural Mississippi, where he embraced the outdoors through fishing and hunting. His youth was marked by a strong sense of community; he was a member of 4-H, played high school football, and was actively involved in Goshen Methodist Church, where he enjoyed playing the piano. He graduated from Carthage High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Delta State University, and received his law degree from the Jackson School of Law.
A passionate advocate for civic engagement, Sonny dedicated much of his career to public service for the State of Mississippi and contributed to numerous political campaigns. He was a proud member of the Civitan Club and the Masons, reflecting his commitment to community and service. Throughout his life, Sonny held a special place in his heart for his mother, often bringing her gifts from his travels. She, in turn, cherished each token, creating a home filled with love and memories.
In his 47 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Nancy Damron Weir, they shared a deep bond rooted in their strong Christian faith. They resided in Mississppi, Tennessee, and Arizona before making their home in Hammond in 2011. They enjoyed traveling and were active members of various Methodist and Baptist churches. Sonny also served as a member of the Gideons, dedicated to spreading the message of hope through scripture. He cherished time spent with his sons and their families, often indulging in the playful rivalry between Ole Miss and Alabama during football season, as his sons graduated from both schools. He found joy in watching Westerns and listening to gospel music.
Sonny is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy, and their sons, Robert Benjamin Weir II and his wife, Amanda Hodges Weir, and Harlan Christopher Weir and his wife, Callie M. Weir. He took immense joy in his grandchildren, Lillian Weir and Samuel Weir, who were a constant source of light in his life. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Bounds, and her husband, Woodie Bounds.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his beloved sisters, Patricia A. Weir and Doris Bowen, who will greet him with open arms.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Sonny’s life during a visitation at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond, located at 2000 N. Morrison Boulevard, Hammond, Louisiana, 70401, on Friday, November 1, 2024, beginning at 1:00 PM until the funeral service at 2:00 PM.
Interment for Sonny will take place on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Rosedale Cemetery, 707 Highway 1027, Pembroke, Kentucky 42266 at 2:00 PM.
In this time of sorrow, let us remember Sonny as a man of integrity, a devoted family man, and a selfless friend whose kindness knew no bounds. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him.
