Peggy June Campbell Barnett passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026, in Hammond, Louisiana, at the age of 78. She was born on Monday, June 9, 1947, in Kansas City, Missouri, to the late Ray and Willie Mae Thompson Campbell. She was a resident of Hammond, Louisiana.
Peggy was a woman whose heart was rooted in love, especially for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her life was guided by a deep and unwavering faith in the Lord, which she carried with quiet devotion every day. She spent many years traveling across the United States as a migrant worker, always saying her favorite work was picking cherries. Peggy also shared her love through her cooking, becoming known for her delicious chicken and dumplings and her unforgettable tater cakes.
Peggy is survived by her son, Carl Barnett Jr. (Margaret); grandchildren, Phillip Cantrell (Nichole), Jake Harris (Jennifer), Johnny Ray Smith (Constance), Samantha Barnett, Brett Smith ( Brittney), Megan Barnett; great grandchildren, Bryer, Branson, Brody, Bentley, Branden, London, Ryan, Faith, Alexander, and Ariel; sisters, Mary Hancock and Joan Campbell; son in law, Dwaine Dawkins.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 48 years, Carl Andrew Barnett Sr., daughters, Paula Dawkins, Kimberly Smith (Johnny R. Smith); parents, Ray and Willie Mae Thompson Campbell; sisters, Betty Rae McDaniel, Ruth Sutton, Della Mae Childres, Barbara Friesen, Judith Sperling, Joyce Swint, Alice Karr, Brenda Campbell, Kay Bowers, and brother, Ray Campbell, Jr.
Her family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Modern Home Hospice for their compassionate care and love, especially Bridget, whose kindness meant so much during a difficult time.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home - Ponchatoula, 100 W. Magnolia St., Ponchatoula, Louisiana 70454, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 10:30 am, with the funeral service following at 11:30 AM.
Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Hammond, Louisiana.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Harry McKneely and Son Funeral Home.
