Pauline Yuhasz Bartus, a beloved member of the Albany community, transitioned to the afterlife on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, at the age of 99, surrounded by her cherished family at her daughter’s home. Born on March 10, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio, Pauline was the daughter of Paul and Elizabeth Yuhasz. Upon graduating from St. Charles High School in St. Charles, Illinois in 1944, Pauline pursued her education in business before relocating with her family to Louisiana in 1946. Her professional career spanned several decades, during which she served the Livingston Parish School Board from 1947 to 1952 and again from 1965 to 1995, holding various positions, including executive secretary to the superintendent.
A devout Christian, Pauline’s unwavering faith led her to serve in various capacities within the Albany Presbyterian Church/Albany Hungarian Presbyterian Church, including Sunday school teacher, deacon, elder, and clerk-of-session. Her involvement extended beyond religious matters, as she actively participated in the Árpádhon Hungarian Settlement Cultural Association, Hungarian Settlement Historical Society and the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandma; her love for her family was evident in every aspect of her life.
She is survived by her son, Louis Paul Bartus (Wendy) of Loranger; daughter, Karen Windham (Mark) of Knoxville, TN; and her devoted daughter and caregiver, Donna Hill (Doug) of Albany, whom shared her home with her mom for the past nine years. Pauline is also blessed with grandchildren, including Ashley Bartus Windham (Sandra), Jenna Alissa Hill, John Louis Bartus, Alanna Windham-Stooksbury (Brandon), Christopher Paul Bartus (Teresa), Amy Windham McKinney (Lance), and Daniel Louis Bartus. Additionally, she is survived by great-grandchildren, Elijah Knox, Aiden Windham-Stooksbury, Tucker Stooksbury, Vera Elizabeth McKinney, Stokely Baxter McKinney, Hunter Stooksbury, Adelyn Michelle Windham, and Ezekiel Ashley Windham. Pauline is also survived by special sister-in-law, MaryAnne Batchelder; many nieces and nephews; former special caregiver, Opal Magliolo and childhood friend, Gertrude Ruppenthal of Batavia, Illinois.
Members of Pauline’s family who passed before her include her husband of 66 years, Louis Charles Bartus; parents Paul and Elizabeth Yuhasz; infant son David Louis Bartus, sister Elizabeth Betty Frindik and special furbabies Pepper and Nikki. She remained close with childhood friends Arlene Turnbull of Monroe, Michigan and Florence Gechei of Cleveland, Ohio until their passing in later years.
Pauline enjoyed attending meetings and events with her husband, going to church and having lunch with members afterwards, traveling, shopping, lunch-outings and attending Silver Sneakers exercise group until the passing of her husband.
In later years, Pauline looked forward to special get-togethers and celebrating birthdays with her family and honorary family members, Greg and Debbie Hill, Wayne Davis, Tammy Davis, and others special to her. Pauline also cherished her trips to north Mississippi to spend time with her son-in-law’s family, who always welcomed her with open arms. Throughout the years, Pauline spent extended stays with her daughter, Karen, and her family in East Tennessee. They embarked on various adventures, exploring the mountains, indulging in shopping, attending special events, and creating unforgettable memories with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pauline found great joy in attending church services and events at Marietta Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Knoxville, where she was consistently welcomed and embraced as a valued member of their congregation.
Her passing leaves behind a void that cannot be easily filled, but her memory will forever inspire those who knew her.
The Bartus family expresses their profound gratitude to Albany Hungarian Presbyterian Church for hosting a special church service and fellowship in honor of Pauline’s 99th birthday recently. The unexpected gesture deeply touched her and her family.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Clarity Hospice and staff at The Crossing, particularly Kim Marionneaux, Joyce Kohler, Wendi Reed, Carla Brumfield and Chaplain Gary Williams, for their unwavering love, care, and support to Pauline and her daughter, Donna, this past year. They also want to thank Ochsner Cancer Center and Ochsner Medical Staff for their exceptional care, compassion and support throughout her later years.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation for Pauline on Saturday, April 26, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Albany Hungarian Presbyterian Church. There will be a funeral service in the church starting at 2:00 p.m., honoring Pauline’s life and the impact she had on the lives of those around her.
Interment will follow at Albany Hungarian Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
