Patricia Hughes Sweeney

Patricia Hughes Sweeney, of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, passed away at North Oaks Medical Center on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at the age of 85. She was born on July 27, 1936, in New Orleans, Louisiana, the daughter of the late James J. "G.G." Hughes and Inez Fererro Hughes. Pat, also known to many as Mamo, was a devoted wife and mother. She and her late husband of 54 years, Michael M. Sweeney, dedicated their lives to raising a family and creating a loving home. They had a passion for restoring antique cars and were founding members of the Gulfport Antique Car Club which later became Cruising on the Coast. Pat had so many interests and talents. She was an expert seamstress who could go from sewing children's clothes to reupholstering car interiors. Pat could bake and garden, she loved swimming and would enter into diving competitions. For fun she loved visiting the casino and going on cruises. She was an active member of the Ponchatoula Community and was a longtime member of the Gardenette Club, being awarded Rose status. Pat was the classic picture of a mother in every way while still being so unique and her children regard her as a saint.

Pat is survived by her children, Tonya Ferguson (Bill), Mike Sweeney (Valerie), Bridget Bennett (Hollis), and Sean Sweeney (Staci); grandchildren, Billy Ferguson (Amy), Chris Ferguson (Fanny), Jason Ferguson (Lindsey), Rachelle Ferguson Rayburn (Scott), Ronnie Gautreaux II (Jennifer), Megan Wells Majorie (Mark), Skylar McCrea (Louie), Ian Santana and Zach Santana (Corinna); and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Michael M. "Mickey" Sweeney and brother, James J. Hughes.

Family and friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 100 W. Magnolia St., Ponchatoula, Louisiana 70454 on Monday, November 15, 2021 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 2:00 pm.

Interment will follow at Sand Hill Cemetery in Ponchatoula, Louisiana.
