Matthew Aaron McGhee

Matthew Aaron McGhee passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2024, in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, at the age of 53. He was born on Wednesday, January 6, 1971, in Metairie, Louisiana to Max and Kay McGhee. He was a resident of Ponchatoula, Louisiana.

Matthew is survived by his four children, Roman Matthew, Luke Aaron, Cara Sofia and Gianna Cate McGhee; parents, Max and Kay McGhee; siblings, Mia Lynne Hall (Scott), Marcie Leigh Barkley (Rick), Lindsay Kay Beall (Josh), and Jennifer Lee Ellis (Shermit); former spouse, Christin Vilardo; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary Pauline Blansett; grandparents, James & Marie DeLand, and nephew, Samuel Matthew Beall.

Matt was a devoted father, beloved son, cherished brother, and friend to so many. He is leaving behind a legacy of love, adventure and unwavering faith. As the father of four incredible teenagers—Roman, Luke, Cara, and Gianna—Matt's heart was full. His journey as a parent began with the joy of welcoming boy-boy-girl triplets in 2008, followed by the blessing of his youngest daughter in 2011. His children were his world, and he embraced every moment with them, from attending nearly every sporting event and school performance, to his fun road trips visiting national parks and their spontaneous weekend hikes discovering fun trails and beautiful waterfalls, making some wonderful life long memories.

Born the third of five children and the only son, Matt learned what it was like navigating the life of a boy in a home full of girls. He developed a unique sensitivity and emotional depth that set him apart. God was shaping him and his character as a man, to understand and offer emotional support for those in his life. His caring nature was perfectly complemented by his sense of humor—his dad jokes never seemed to stop and never failed to bring laughter to people he was around. His love for music was only surpassed by his passion for food. He found joy and relaxation in both preparing and sharing delicious meals. For Matt, food wasn't just about eating, it was how he showed love, bringing people together around the table and creating moments that became memories.

Matt was a passionate baseball player, and played baseball for Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Mississippi. But once his children stepped foot on the soccer fields, baseball was surpassed by his newfound love for soccer, inspired by Roman, Luke, Cara and Gianna, or as he called them, RoLuCaGi. His babies transformed him into one of the biggest soccer fans, cheering them on with the same fervor he had for baseball.

Matt studied Christian Theology at Southeastern University, in Lakeland, Florida. He became a leader in his local churches, mentoring youth and college-aged adults. He was relied on by many, earning a reputation for compassion and guidance. In looking back, it makes complete sense why he had such a deep love for wolves and lighthouses, as that naturally reflected his strength and guidance in the lives of those around him. Matt's generosity truly knew no bounds.

Above all, Matt's devotion to his family, his 4 beautiful children and his faith in the Lord were the cornerstones of his life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Rest in peace, Matt. Your light will continue to shine in our hearts forever.
