Mary Anne Shackelford Forbes was born on August 19, 1938 in Kirbyville, Texas, home of her mother and father, grandmother and grandfather. By the time she was 23, she and her husband, E.A. Forbes, were raising three boys in Hammond, LA. Her path to Hammond passed through Baton Rouge, where she was a Baton Rouge High School Bulldog, and then Southeastern Louisiana College. By the time she passed away on October 4, 2021, she and E.A. were married 64 years, had put all three boys through college and married them off, had six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She had also earned Bachelorâs and Masterâs degrees with honors in Education at SLU and worked as an elementary school teacher in Hammond and Loranger, changing innumerable lives for the better, especially by insisting that we all speak proper English.
During their lives together, Mary Anne and E.A lived in Virginia, Arizona, Arkansas and Louisiana, and loved driving, flying and cruising across the country and around the world. Mary Anne loved keeping and spoiling her grandchildren, and E.A. and Mary Anne danced their way late into the night more times than a person can count. She loved her life to the end.
She is lovingly remembered and missed by her husband, E.A., her sister Katie Chaney and her brother William Shackelford, her son Mike and his wife Nancy Stevens, son Pat and his wife Ana, son Lee, and grandchildren Leigh Culpepper, John Culpepper, Caroline, Jackson, Andie and Ben Forbes.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother and grandfather, Lily and Dewey Pierce, her mother, Mary Helen Ritter, her father, William Shackelford, her step-father Wilbert Ritter, her sister, Lynne Ricord and her brother, John Dewey Ritter.
The family will have a Celebration of Life at a future date.
