Margaret Irene Mele

Margaret Irene Mele  passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2019, in Hammond, Louisiana, at the age of 92.  She was born on Wednesday, February 20, 1927 in Independence, Louisiana to the late Mattie Dixon and the late Steve Johnson, and was raised in Albany, Louisiana.  She was a resident of Hammond, Louisiana.  Margaret was a long standing member of the Catholic Daughters of America, as well as a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church.  She was also a bookkeeper at A&P for many years.

Margaret is survived by her son, Vito Mele, and his wife, Olivia; daughters, JoAnn Cali, and her husband, Dominick, and Susan Tiley, and her husband, George; brother, Steve Johnson, and his wife, Mary Ann; grandsons, Joseph P. Mele and John and George P. Tiley; granddaughters, Angela Locicero, and her husband, John, Pam Bankston, and her husband, Chris, and Cindy Lavergne, and her husband, Travis; and great-grandchildren, Lana and Luke Locicero, Brennan Bankston, and Lainey Lavergne.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe Mele; brother, Elmer "Johnny" Johnson; and sister, MaryLee Roberts.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Visitation on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 2000 N Morrison Boulevard, Hammond, LA 70401 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.  The family would like to invite those who wish to participate in the Rosary with them to join them in doing so at 5:30 PM in the funeral home chapel on Thursday. The Visitation will continue on March 1, 2019 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church from 9:00 AM until the Funeral Mass begins at 11:00 AM.

Interment will follow in Rose Memorial Park Cemetery, Hammond, Louisiana.

The family has requested that donations be made to Richard Murphy Hospice House.
