Mamie Marie Lala Vuskovich was born on February 8, 1943, in Independence, Louisiana, to the late Joseph Francis Lala III and Mamie Pauline Cali Lala of Hammond, Louisiana. She passed away peacefully at her home in New Orleans, Louisiana, on July 21, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
She is survived by her beloved children: Lisha Vuskovich and her husband, Michael Allsup; Kara Thevenot and her husband, Brian; and Matthew Vuskovich III, Ph.D., and his wife, Claudia. She is also survived by her devoted siblings: Josephine Pierce; Marie Ritchie and her late husband, Ronnie; Vickie Pilie and her husband, Maurice; and Jeannie Krawczyk and her husband, Dwayne. Mamie was a devoted and adoring grandmother to Ethan, Rhodes, Eve, and Mamie. She also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews, along with her two beloved godchildren, Rhonda and James.
In addition to her parents, Mamie was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Joseph “Buddy” Lala; her nephew, Michael Piazza; and her great-nephew, Austin Sabold.
Mamie was raised in Hammond, Louisiana where she attended Annie Eastman, Hammond High School and briefly attended Southeastern Louisiana University.
Mamie dedicated most of her professional life to administrative and executive support roles. She worked for many years at Marco Polo Importers, as well as in various doctors’ offices in Hammond, Louisiana—most notably serving as an integral part of the day-to-day operations for the late Dr. Thames.
She was a devout Catholic, a longtime parishioner and Eucharistic Minister at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, and a dedicated member of the Dominican Laity. As part of the Laity, Mamie embraced a life of prayer, study, and service, living out the Dominican mission by offering spiritual support to others, visiting the sick, and helping those in need in her community. Her faith was not just a belief but a way of life—quietly powerful and deeply compassionate.
Mamie will always be remembered as a kind, loving, and selfless person who was always ready to help others in any way she could. Her warmth and generosity touched everyone who knew her.
Visitation will be held at Holy Ghost Catholic Church on Thursday, July 24, 2025, beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by Father Charles Johnson. Interment will follow at Rose Memorial Park.
