Louisette Schuyten Bordelon

Louisette Schuyten Bordelon of Hammond, Louisiana, passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2023 at the age of 82. Lou was born in New Orleans, Louisiana,  on March 24, 1941. She lived most of her life in Hammond, Louisiana. Lou was a registered nurse who was passionate about bringing end of life care to terminally ill patients. She believed in compassionate care for those who are experiencing an advanced, life-limiting illness and that patients and their families should have medical, social, emotional, and practical support throughout this final phase. For this reason, she was instrumental in helping to establish the Richard Murphy Hospice in Hammond. 

Later, Lou was the driving force behind opening Hammond Strawberry Fields. This organization serves individuals with developmental disabilities by providing supervised independent living, dayhab, and residential housing. Hammond Strawberry Fields is where Lou worked until she retired.  Lou was also an active member of the P. E.O., a philanthropic, nonprofit organization, where women celebrate the advancement of other women by offering scholarships, grants, and other stewardship opportunities. The P. E. O.’s goal is to motivate and assist other women to achieve their highest aspirations. 

We will remember Lou’s generous heart and her selfless dedication for providing care and comfort to others. She had a gift for caregiving that enhanced the lives of numerous patients and their families. Lou is loved by many and will be greatly missed. She leaves a legacy of caring for others throughout our community..

She is survived by daughters; Lisa Bordelon Burns (Ed), Lori Bordelon Davis, and sons; Jeff Bordelon (Molly), David Bordelon, and Hart Bordelon (Noelle).  Grandchildren; Brittany Bordelon Pellichino, Natalie Bordelon Umbach, Caroline Bordelon Pinion, Hannah Bordelon, Anne Burns, Trent Burns, Megan Davis, Andrew Bordelon, and Holly Bordelon. Great grandchildren; Kate Pinion, Duke Pellichino, Louella Umbach, Lilly Pinion, Luca Pellichino, and Ridge Umbach.

She is preceded in death by her parents Hartwig and Luella Bonnabel Schuyten and her brother, Hartwig Andrew Schuyten, Jr.  

Services will be in Hammond on Thursday, June 1st, 2023 at Harry Mckneely & Son Funeral Home, 2000 North Morrison Blvd. Hammond, La. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. Fr. Cayet O.P., Associate Pastor of Holy Ghost Church of Hammond, will conduct the religious service at 12:00 pm. 

The family would like to express their appreciation to Passages Hospice and the Richard Murphy Hospice House of Hammond for the special care and attention given to their mother.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the Richard Murphy Hospice House “In memory of Lou Bordelon.”
