Lawrence John "Pope" Madere

Lawrence John "Pope" Madere, a native of Edgard and resident of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the age of 89. He was born on January 27, 1935, in Edgard, Louisiana, the son of the late Maurice Madere Sr. and Louise Weber Madere. He retired from Universal Match Corporation in Kenner.  Pope loved doing anything outside including catfishing in Lake Des Allemands and duck hunting on the Mississippi River.  Pope always had something growing in his garden.  He raised tropical birds and peacocks and had milk goats he and Mary made cheese from.  He liked to watch westerns on tv especially John Wayne movies.  

Pope is survived by his daughter, Lynn Langley and fiancé Clint; son, William Shane Newton and wife Vicky; grandchildren, Brad William Langley, Amber Langley, Brittany Crum and husband Clent, and William Garrett Newton and wife Brittney; great-grandchildren, Aubree, Demi, Cheyenne, and Greyson; brother, Richard Madere and wife Gloria; sister-in-law, Lena Mae Madere; close niece, Jeanne Raiford and husband Tim; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Pope was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Margie Blanchard Madere; brothers, Maurice Madere, Jr. and James Madere, Sr; sisters, Alice Tortorich and husband Joseph and Celine "Sal" LaCaze and husband J.P.; and godchild, Timmy Raiford, Jr.   

Family and friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 100 W. Magnolia St., Ponchatoula, Louisiana 70454 on Saturday, February 17, 2024 from 12:00 pm until the Memorial Service begins at 2:00 pm.
