Kathleen June Bartels, Ph.D.

Kathleen June Bartels, Ph.D., of Hammond, Louisiana, passed away at her home on Friday, July 28, 2023, at the age of 70. She was born on June 27, 1953, in New Orleans, Louisiana, the daughter of the late Herman W. Bartels, Sr. and Shirley Nuss Bartels. Kathleen is a graduate of LSU and received her Ph.D. from the University of New Orleans. For many years she taught speech pathology and audiology, and retired from SELU after teaching special education for over 20 years.  After her retirement, Kathleen opened Bartels Center for Hearing & Balance in Hammond. Kathleen was a member of ASHA: American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and volunteered at the Fuller Center for Housing in Hammond for over 10 years. Kathleen loved dogs, collecting art, and traveling, and she will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

Kathleen is survived by her brothers, Glenn Bartels (Cathy) and Herman William "Billy" Bartels, Jr.; nephews, Glenn "Butch" Bartels Jr. (Maria), Drake Bartels, and Victor "V.J." Walsh Jr. (godchild); niece, Christine Cerniglia (Philip); great nephews, George and Henry Cerniglia; brother-in-law, Victor Walsh Sr.; and godchild, Amelia-Kate Gore.

In addition to her parents, Kathleen was preceded in death by her sister, Cheryl Ann Walsh.

Family and friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd, Hammond, Louisiana 70401 on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, from 9:00 am until 11:00 am.

A Memorial Service will immediately follow at 11:00 am, with Deacon William Francioni officiating.

Kathleen's final resting place will be with her family at Hope Mausoleum in New Orleans.
