Joseph Michael Jason, longtime resident of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at North Oaks Medical Center on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the age of 80. A cherished member of his community and a devoted family man, Joe was born on January 9, 1945, in Ponchatoula. A proud veteran of the United States Army, he passionately served his country with honor. Joe’s love for his nation was matched by his deep commitment to his faith, as he served as an usher and a member of the Ministry Board at St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was also actively involved in the Knights of Columbus.
He dedicated over twenty years managing A&P Grocery stores, later retiring from Albertson's Grocery Store in Hammond after more than twenty-five years. Joe took great joy in his work and relished the friendships he built with his coworkers.
A true craftsman, Joe had a passion for woodworking, particularly with cypress. He found immense joy in collaborating with his son and grandson to create beautiful pieces such as rockers, benches, swings, and chairs that they would sell at various arts and crafts shows.
Joe’s love for his family was boundless. His wife was his soul mate for over 55 years, and he treasured each of his children and grandchildren. Known for his friendly demeanor, Joe never met a stranger and enjoyed sharing his stories and experiences, often boasting about the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated medical professionals who cared for Joe over the years, including his longtime physician Dr. Greg Allen, Dr. David Oubre at Pontchartrain Cancer Center, and the doctors and staff at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and North Oaks Medical Center. They are also thankful for the supportive presence of Fr. Paul McDuffie and Deacon Larry Melancon, who provided prayers, encouragement, and wisdom as Joe faced challenging times.
Joe leaves behind a legacy of love, commitment, and community service that will forever be remembered by all who knew him.
Joseph is survived by his beloved wife, Mildred Jackson Jason; children, John Jason and his wife Catherine, Joseph Mark Jason, and Rachael Giurintano and her husband Scott; grandchildren, Jessica, Julianna, John Jr. and Jacob Jason, and Logan, Andrew, and Megan Giurintano; sister, Betty Adams; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
