Joseph Dominic Graziano, Sr.

Joseph Dominic Graziano, Sr., died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at Hospice House in Hammond, LA. He was 80 years old. Born January 29, 1936, he was a native and lifelong resident of Hammond. He was preceded in death by his parents; Anna Pecararo Graziano and Frank Graziano, and a baby sister, Frankie Marie. He had a close bond with his paternal grandfather, Joseph Graziano, his namesake, who passed away when Joe was only 11 years old.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sara Baglio Graziano (an Independence native); a son, Joseph D. Graziano, Jr.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Cindy Lauderdale, and Melissa and Michael Gispert of Madisonville; and five beloved grandchildren; Jared and Erin Bernard Lauderdale (a Houma native), Brock Lauderdale, Chase Gispert and Hope Gispert of Madisonville, and their precious little Maltese, Rudy.

Also, surviving are two sisters; Anne Garafola and Julie Kinchen both of Hammond. Several cousins and a great aunt, Virginia Graziano O'Neil age 96 of Baton Rouge.

Growing up, Joe, was somewhat of a “Huck Fin” character as a young boy. He waded through bayous and swamps hunting and fishing all day. Otherwise, as an all-around athlete, he was playing ball, whatever sport was in season. Friends and he often played at the old Orange Street Park… or in the fields and woods near the Hammond airport. Many became lasting compatriots forming the “Old Timers” group. Among them; Tony “Bull” Genaro, Paul Sharpe (deceased), Richard Bankston and so many others.

To relatives he could be a unique personality arousing laughter at family gatherings. At times he proved entertaining to the amusement of his nieces and nephews. Good times were the theme. He enjoyed watching games too, especially college football.

He was a true raconteur, crafting word pictures in vivid colors. The descriptions made his stories come alive. There was a sense of excitement unfolding. He had a way of capturing your imagination that left you nostalgic.

Joe was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus local John F. Kennedy chapter. He was active in the Holy Ghost Parish and St. Albert Chapel communities participating in classes and events. And volunteered his time at the catholic student center as well. As a devout Catholic, he lived his faith.

He loved music and dancing always rising to the occasion. As a young man, his singing voice was so good, he was invited to go on tour with a popular band by their director. However, other circumstances prevailed.

Having attended Southeastern Louisiana University in the 1950’s he embarked on a successful business career. Working in finance, sales, real estate and ultimately as a certified independent insurance agent. He enjoyed the interaction with people and clients. Joe prided himself on knowledge in his field and integrity. He was truly honest to a fault. A wise and insightful man with a gift for reading people.

The family would like to express special thanks to the Carolyn and Conrad Rossie families, the Gloria and Robert Drude families, the Lena and Frank Cardaronella (both deceased) families for their love and support. It is much appreciated! Also, to the friends that have offered prayers and condolences.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 9th from 9 - 11 AM at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Hammond. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow. Interment will be at Rose Memorial Mausoleum. Family and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers the family requests mass intentions for the repose of his soul.

Additional gratitude is extended to the staffs of Heart of Hospice and the Richard Murphy Hospice House. Their care and consideration was of great comfort. Also, thanks to the staff of Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Homes for their professionalism during this time.

In closing, Joe Graziano, was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will live on in the hearts of his family, forever loved and cherished. We will see him in our dreams. Rest well “Papoo”… at last you are home.
