John "Red" Thompson, Sr. passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2026, in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, at the age of 88. He was born on Saturday, November 6, 1937 in Saint Francisville, Louisiana to the late Minnie and Henry Phillip Thompson. He was a resident of Ponchatoula, Louisiana. John was a proud Navy Veteran and dedicated member of the Baptist Nursing Home Ministry. He was the lead singer in a popular 60’s band, “The Rocks.” They performed regularly at the Cave Tangi
John is survived by his children, Doni Iriece Thompson Miller (James) and Michael Joseph Thompson (Crystal); grandchildren, Lance, Rayna (Noah), Travis, Kayley, Michael, Jr., Bayley, Frankie (Amanda), Jeañ, Amber, TJ; brother, Richard Thompson; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Erlene Marie Eady Thompson; children, John H. Thompson, Jr., Kathy Lynn Thompson and Paula Ann Effler; parents, Minnie and Henry Phillip Thompson; siblings, Virginia Carroll, Lela Thompson and Jeanette Brown; granddaughter, Nicole Pinion; and great-granddaughter, Hollie Ann.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd, Hammond, Louisiana 70401, on Sunday, April 19, 2026 at 8:30 am. until service begins at 11:00.
Interment will follow in Sand Hill Cemetery, Ponchatoula, Louisiana.
