Dr. John Harvey Labbe

Dr. John Harvey Labbe, of Hammond, Louisiana, passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at the age of 65. He was a devoted husband and dedicated father who loved his family dearly, enjoyed music, golf, dancing, spending time with family and friends, and who appreciated a good prank or two. He genuinely loved all he encountered, made friends easily, and forgave generously.

John loved his profession of Optometry. He enjoyed serving his patients in the WalMart Vision Centers of Hammond, Amite, Denham Springs, and Watson; he formerly worked for Ochsner Health System, Lallie Kemp, and had opened his private practice, Labbe Eye Clinic, in Hammond. John was quick-witted, always cracking a joke, always smiling.

John was a devoted, practicing Catholic and a lifelong member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Hammond, Louisiana. His days began in prayer with the rosary and a reflection on sacred scripture.

John was born on December 24, 1959, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the son of the late John Sanford Labbe and Elizabeth Denton Labbe. He graduated from Hammond High School, completed his undergraduate at Southeastern Louisiana University, and obtained his doctorate from the University of Houston School of Optometry. John was a member of the Optometry Association of Louisiana.

John is survived by his wife, Trisha Bender Labbe; children, Madeline Labbe Bulloch (Daniel), Sarah Labbe, and Patrick Labbe; brothers Charles Labbe (Trang), Tom Labbe (Vicky), and Steve Labbe (Jan); brothers-in-law John Scott Bender (Shana) and Michael Bender (Jill); and nieces, Anne Labbe Gowan (John), Susan Labbe Craigie (Danny), Lara Labbe Maginel (Curt), Jennifer Gee Wilson (John), Victoria Bender, Olivia Bender, and Tessa Bender; nephews, Stephen Labbe (Jennifer), Chuck Labbe, Tommy Labbe (Lacy), Scott Gee (Amy), John Austin Bender, and Campbell Bender.

Friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son in Hammond on Thursday, February 27th from 6pm to 9pm and at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Hammond, Louisiana on Friday, February 28th from 9am until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11am with Fr. Robert Merced, O.P. presiding and Fr. Cayet Mangiaracina, O.P. concelebrating.

Interment will follow at Tangipahoa Cemetery in Kentwood, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
