John Wayne Evans passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2025. He was 87. John was born on Sunday, October 17, 1937, in Nashville, Tennessee. He graduated from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He attended Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. In 1962, he received a commission as an Ensign in the US Navy. He was honorably discharged as a lieutenant in the USN after four years of service.
He married Betty Doris Cathey in 1955, when they were both 18. They would have celebrated 70 years together in December.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; son, Samuel Craig Evans and his wife, Stacey; grandchildren, Sarah Rudolph and her husband, Adam, Sawyer Evans and his wife, Alex; four great-grandchildren, June, Jean, Jade, and Luke; and his brother, David Evans.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John T. Evans and Sarah Lucille Evans, and his sister, Joyce Robertson.
He owned Community Motors, the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram Dealership for just shy of 50 years.
He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed many fishing trips with his family and friends.
Family and friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home - Hammond, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd, Hammond, Louisiana 70401, on Friday, August 29, 2025, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home - Hammond on Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 10:00 am until the memorial service begins at 11:00 am with Pastor Mike Roberts officiating.
