James Elmer Mitchell

James Elmer Mitchell passed away at his home in Baton Rouge on Friday, December 23, 2016 at the age of 80. Born in Booneville, MS in 1936, Elmer is predeceased by his parents, J.T. and Willma Mitchell, and his brothers and sisters, WL Mitchell, Henry Mitchell, Hoyle and Doyle Mitchell, Wilma Ree Thornhill, Wanda Ree Fagan and Deborah Mitchell.

Elmer is survived by the love of his life, devoted wife Georgia Ann Lavigne Mitchell of 59 years. They were married in Albany, Louisiana on March 19, 1957.

Elmer is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and Martin Wesley (Dallas) and Mark and Suzanne Hornsby (Shreveport). He is also lovingly remembered by his granddaughters, Meagan Venable, Lacey Venable, Rachel Hornsby Stone and husband Derek and Katherine Hornsby.   He is survived by one great-granddaughter, Olivia Stone as well as numerous other nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Elmer served in the U.S. Army as a medic in the Korean War from 1958-1960.  He retired from Borden Chemical after 30 years of service and spent his remaining years traveling with Georgia Ann to Alaska, Hawaii, Nova Scotia and extensively throughout the United States. He loved outdoor sports, hunting and fishing and spending time with his brothers and nephews. An ardent family man, his door was always open with a welcoming, "ya'll get out and come in".

The visitation will be held at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 2000 N Morrison Ave, Hammond, LA on December 26, 2016 at 9:00 am followed by the funeral service at 1:00 pm. Interment will be at Parklawn Cemetery, Hammond, LA immediately following the service.
