Hulon Allen Stevens

Hulon Allen Stevens passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2020, at the age of 81. He was born on Tuesday, September 6, 1938, in Hammond, Louisiana. Hulon was a resident of Loranger, Louisiana.

The passing of Hulon Stevens was not only a loss felt by those of us who loved and cherished every moment we had with him, but his passing was the world’s loss as well. He was one of the last of his generation,a true man’s man as was his father before him. He was raised along the banks of the Tangipahoa River in the Ebenezer community just northeast of Hammond. Being raised on a farm, where hard work and the love of family was always present,helped mold the burly, soft-hearted man that many of us were lucky enough to know. “Hudie” as he was known when he was younger, Paw Paw and Big Paw Paw to the grandkids, he was daddy to his children and was simply referred to by his wife as Honey. He married his childhood sweetheart and enjoyed a marriage lasting over 62 years and raised 5 children that he adored, as did they him. He was a talented fullback at Hammond High where two of his cousins paved the way to a 1000 yard season, and a love of animals and the outdoors was always present in his life.

He made a living as a dairy farmer for most of 40 years and numerous relationships were made from that choice of life.  He had a deep love of animals, his cows, his dogs and chickens, a love passed down from his father and he passed that love down three generations and still counting.He was an avid fox hunter as well as deer, most anything a dog could chase was to his liking. He truly loved people and it was quite evident by the numerous friends and relations that frequented his home often for casual visits. He loved the lifestyle that he knew as a child whether it was making a large garden or killing hogs to make sausage and hog head cheese and would eventually give most of his makings to friends and neighbors.

A damaging heart attack over 25 years ago slowed him only slightly, but a larger one last year had the doctors affirming he’d not make the transport home if we chose to do so. It took almost 9 months afterwards for the good Lord to call him home, the grit and determination he learned as a youth served him well for many years, but none greater than this past year. He was bed ridden on hospice when brought home, but as the nurses and doctors soon found out they were not nursing a man ready to give up. First a wheel chair, then a walker and eventually only a cane was needed for him to get about. This past year found him still feeding his animals albeit a scaled back work load and up until a few days ago he was still riding his cart out in the field checking on his beef cows.

Many lives were touched by our father as has been evident from the outpouring of condolences we have received and each has been greatly appreciated by our mother and us children. His faith in his Lord and Savior was solid and his love for others was quite evident. He felt a person’s actions spoke louder than words and the way he saw the world gave credence to that fact. One of his favorite sayings on the matter of love was, “Don’t tell me you love me, show me.” As a father and husband, he didn’t fail in that regard. You will be sadly missed and we’ll be forever grateful for the love and legacy you’ve left behind.  

All prayers and condolences are so very much appreciated and we truly regret that we cannot extend an invitation to the family services due to the state of emergency we find ourselves in at this time.

Hulon is survived by his wife of 62 years, June Dunnington Stevens; daughters, Becki Stevens Newman and her husband Herman, and Beth Stevens Jones and Lance Fitzgerald; son, Terry Hulon Stevens and his wife Brenda, Bradley Shane Stevens and his wife Mary, and Wade Allen Stevens and his wife Melissa; grandchildren, Lance, Laramie, Hollie, Trevor, Kolby, Dakota, Slade, Kelsey, Trent, Logan and Bryce; 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth Clinton Stevens; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Volena Stevens; sister, Hermine Gottschalck; brother, Raymond Stevens; and nephew Ray Allen Gottschalck.

Services will be private. Interment will be at Stevens Cemetery, Tickfaw, Louisiana.
