Huey Pierce Husser, 85, of Ponchatoula, recognized as one of Southeastern Louisiana Universityâs most acclaimed football players, passed away peacefully at the Richard Murphy Hospice House on May 28.
Husser, born Nov. 25, 1933, was an all-state end at Ponchatoula High School where he lettered in both football and basketball. At Southeastern, he lettered in football for four years. He was a member of the schoolâs undefeated 1954 football team and was the teamâs leading scorer for two years. He was an all-conference player for three years and was named an NAIA Associated Press All-American in 1955. He was inducted into the SLU Athletic Hall of Fame with the class of 1998-99 and was active in Hall Of Fame activities. He remains fifth in all-time career touchdowns with 15. He was invited to join the Chicago Cardinals NFL football team in 1959 but was drafted into military service early in his professional career.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Ann Blaise Husser; three children, Mark Husser, (Christine) of New York City; Lori Husser of Lafayette; and Shayna Husser Smith of Greensburg; four half-brothers, Frankie Husser (Brenda), Johnny Husser (Jo), Joey Husser, and Marvin Husser, all of Ponchatoula; grandchildren Brantley Smith, Brennan Smith, Joni Lene Smith, Amber Zmeskal, Jackson Husser, and Hayden Husser; great-grand children Austin Zmeskal, Brayden Zmeskal, and Everlee Rose Milton; three step children, Georgette Phares, Dabney Cashe, and Bryce Statham; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved pets, Lacy Louise, his dog, and Citrus, Molly and Tony, his cats.
He was preceded in death by his parents Marvin Husser and Lillie Husser Passman; and wives Joan Grosch Husser and Theresa Statham Husser.
Husser served in the U.S. Army as a member of an armored unit and while in the army, stationed in Ulm Germany, he continued to play football and basketball for base teams. After Southeastern dropped football, Husser worked with former Coach Stanley Galloway to promote the return of football and was named the first president of the Former Football Players Association.
For many years Husser was an automobile dealer and finished his lengthy professional career in recreational vehicles. Husser was known as an enthusiastic outdoorsman and sportsman and particularly enjoyed waterfowl hunting and conservation, and had been a professional racing boat driver for a number of years. Among many other interests, Husser was an historic train and aircraft enthusiast, an accomplished craftsman, and enjoyed building extensive model train layouts and flying model airplanes.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at visitation on Saturday, June 1, from 9:00a.m.-12:00 p.m., and a celebration-of-life service beginning at 12:00p.m. at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond, 2000 N Morrison Boulevard, Hammond, Louisiana 70401.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Richard Murphy Hospice House at 1109 S. Chestnut St., Hammond, La., 70403.
