Gordon Bennett Nettles passed away peacefully at the home of his son & daughter-in-law in Hammond, Louisiana on July 19, 2023, at age of 86. Gordon was born on December 8, 1936, in Denham Springs to the late Bertha Jones and Hansford Chester Nettles and he was the seventh of eight children. He enlisted in the Marines and was a private from May 7, 1956 until August 6, 1959 serving as an engineer equipment operator. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal which is one of the oldest military awards in the US Armed Forces for exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity in active Federal Military Service and he was awarded the sharpshooters badge for the Rifle Caliber 30. Years later, Gordon would marry the love of his life, Janis Johnston on January 16, 1963, and would be married for 57 years. Gordon was a self-made entrepreneur who owned Netco, GBN Construction, Prestige RV Center, Nettles Excavator's, and Carter of Louisiana just to name a few. He was just as much a Christian family man as he was a hard-working man. In addition to loving his bride, he was the proud father of two sons, Brian & Mark and he loved being a pawpaw. Upon retirement, Gordon and his bride would tour the country in their motorhome and spend mornings enjoying a hot cup of coffee and watching the sun rise together.
Gordon is survived by his sons, Gordon Brian Nettles and Mark Bennett Nettles (Emilie); grandchildren, Lawson, Gabrielle, McKay, and Emma; brother, Richard Nettles of Denham Springs; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends.
In addition to his parents, Gordon is preceded in death by his bride, Janis; and siblings, Hansford Dennis Nettles, Anne Marie Nettles Sysak Owens, James Nettles, Patsy Hooks Warner, Charles W. "Billy" Nettles, and Robert D. "Hank" Nettles.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff of Hospice of Baton Rouge and Wilkinson Care Giving for their love and services.
Family and friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd, Hammond, Louisiana 70401 on Friday, July 21, 2023 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am.
