Gloria Mae Rihner Joubert

Gloria Mae Rihner Joubert, a patient and generous woman who loved cards, dance floors and the racetrack -- where her strategy of betting on the “ponies with the best rear ends” should have made her rich but never did -- died peacefully in her Ponchatoula home on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2021.

Five years shy of a century old and affectionately known as “Glo,” Ms. Joubert loved to talk. Every conversation brought a story and a contagious laugh.

The middle name? Yes, was named after Mae West. The disappearing condiment packages from any restaurant she visited? That would bring a reminder that she had “lived through the Great Depression, you know.”

But kindness was her real calling card. And she was as good a listener as she was a talker. Her children and grandchildren always knew how deeply she loved them.

Born Oct. 7, 1925, in New Orleans to Sidney and Amelia Rihner, Glo worked for 60 years as a bookkeeper at businesses around the city. For decades, she lived in New Orleans and then Metairie, moving to Ponchatoula after Hurricane Katrina flooded her home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Sidney Michael Rihner, and a granddaughter, Taylor Joubert Giesbrecht.

Survivors include her children, René Joubert (Cecilia), Janet Joubert, James Joubert (Terri), and Yvonne Sundquist; grandchildren

Nichole McPherson, Ann Rene Weiss, Paulette Joubert, Ashley Joubert, Lindsay Joubert, and Steven, Elena, and Jessica Sundquist; and 12 great grandchildren.

Burial arrangements are private under the direction of Harry McKneely & Son - Hammond & Ponchatoula.
