Gloria Huttner Ross, 92, died Monday, November 21, 2016 at Landmark Nursing Home in Hammond following several months of declining health. She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Schoenberger and son, John A. Ross, Jr. and 4 grand children, Casey and wife Liz, Colin, and Sara Schoenberger and Leeza Ross along with several loved nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, John A. Ross, her parents, Joseph and Mary Huttner, her brother, Joe Huttner and sister, Hope Stewart.
Gloria was born in 1924 in New Orleans. She graduated from Tulane University with a degree in chemistry and a Master of Fine Arts from Newcomb College. She moved to Hammond in 1969 when her husband's company relocated to Amite. In Hammond, she became very active in the arts community. She was a founding board member of the Hammond Regional Arts Center where she served for 12 years, one year as its president. She was a long time active member and exhibitor of the Hammond Art Guild winning numerous awards and honors over the years. Additionally, she was a member of galleries in McComb, Covington, New Orleans and Baton Rouge. She taught interior design at Southeastern Louisiana University for several years and volunteered her time teaching art in many workshops and camps. She also wrote a weekly art column for The Daily Star for 21 years.
Gloria's art work took many forms. She painted using water colors and acrylic, created collages using "found" materials, and experimented with many other media. Her most recent works, using metal plates as a painting surface, were very distinctive abstracts. Texture interested her most in her work and it is reflected in all the art forms she created. Many of her works can be viewed in private homes and public venues such as the President's house at SLU and at North Oaks Hospital.
Arrangements are incomplete at this time. A memorial service will follow at a later date.
Donations in her memory may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the Hammond Regional Arts Center, P.O. Box 2974, Hammond, LA 70404.
