Gerald B. "Jerry" Verburg passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at his residence in Hammond, Louisiana, following a long battle with cancer, at the age of 84.  He was born on Wednesday, December 9, 1931, and was a native of Hammond.  He lived most of his adult life in Metairie, LA and later, in Picayune, MS, where he lived until returning to Hammond in 2012.  He was a graduate of Hammond High School before serving his country in the United States Air Force.  He returned to Hammond where he attended and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from Southeastern Louisiana College.  Following a brief period in the private sector, he joined the United States Department of Agriculture as a research chemist where he was employed until his retirement in 1987.  Upon his retirement, he spent much of his time enjoying life on his beautiful farm in Picayune, MS until 2012, when health issues required that he return to Hammond to be closer to family.

Gerald is survived by his niece, Jennifer H. Allen and her husband, G. Wayne Allen of Hammond; his niece, Rebecca L. Howes of Ponchatoula; great nephew, Brandon W. Allen and his wife, Jacqueline of Dallas, TX; great nephew, Dustin C. Barnett and his wife, Chantelle of French Settlement; great niece, Courtney Allen Ridgedell and her husband, Fletcher of Hammond; and great niece, Gabrielle Michaela Sanders of Ponchatoula.  He is also survived by four great-great nephews and one great-great niece, and many very special cousins all of whom he loved very much.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Gerald Verburg and Mary Ashley Verburg, as well as his sister, Marianne Verburg Howes and her husband, Louis T. Howes.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service in the chapel of  Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd, Hammond, Louisiana 70401, on Friday, September 16, 2016 at 11:00 am.  Visitation will begin at 9:00 am and will continue until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 am.

Interment will immediately follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond, Louisiana.
