George Ray Coxen passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 26, 2026, at the age of 73, with the love and support of his family and many dear friends. He was a resident of Manchac, La.
He was born in Wichita Falls, TX on November 1, 1952, to Otis John Coxen and Wanda King Coxen. He graduated from Tylertown High School. He went on to play football and graduate from Southwest Mississippi Community College. He was a longstanding supporter of Oak Forest Academy in Amite and coached baseball with the Amite Recreation League for many years.
With over 40 years of fire service, he retired as District Fire Chief from Tangipahoa Fire District No. 1 in 2016 and as Fire Chief of the Manchac Volunteer Fire Department in 2024. He was dedicated to the people and communities he served. He was also an avid commercial fisherman who loved to hunt and fish. He was greatly loved and respected by his family of fellow sportsmen.
He enjoyed fixing and building things, cooking, listening to music, and spending time with family and friends. He was brave and strong. He was always there when needed. He was all the good things a man should be.
He is survived by his loving wife, Brande Watkins Coxen; his children, Bo Coxen (Nicole), Jay Coxen (Whitney), Trea Coxen, Madison Coxen and stepson, Branden Funk Watkins; his siblings, Jerry Coxen and wife Reba, Christi Cox and husband Tommy; his grandchildren, Aniston, Anslee, Addi, Zane, Zoe, Charlotte, Eli, Mason, and their mother Amanda; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Otis John Coxen Sr. and Wanda King Coxen, and brother, John Coxen Jr.
He was so loved and will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Manchac on July 25, 2026- details to be announced at a later date.
