George C. Reno

George C. Reno of Ponchatoula went to be with his Lord on Monday evening, August 22, 2022, surrounded by family and friends. He was 93.

Mr. Reno was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Ruby Berkey Reno of Buras, LA. (originally of Orenogo, MO). He was also preceded in death by his daughter Pamela Reazin; his grandson George R. Ener; and his brother Edward (Eddie) Reno.

Mr. Reno is survived by his daughter Rose (Claude) Ener of Pasadena, TX; his son George Harold Reno (Sandy) of Ponchatoula and Boothville, LA, and his son Troy (JoAnna) Farris of Gulfport, MS; as well as his brother Harry (Sonny) Reno. Mr. Reno is also survived by nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Reno was born in Tangipahoa Parish in 1928 in the area surrounding Manchac. He attended Ponchatoula High School as well as Eastern Mennonite High School in Harrisonburg, VA. He was a shrimper, trapper, boat builder and Christian minister in the Mennonite church for most of his life. He was a major influence in the Gulf States Mennonite Conference where he also pastored, and was part of the original vision and leadership of Pine Lake Fellowship Camp in Meridian, MS.

Mr. Reno loved all things associated with commercial fishing: building boats, building nets, and above all, the relationships that were built resulting from these pursuits. It may be stated that building relationships and being a servant to others was his ultimate pursuit, and through those relationships, earning the right and the trust to share the gospel with those sent his way. His humble leadership and gentle good humor will be that which those who knew him, and loved him, miss the most.

Visitation will be held Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Ponchatoula from 11:00 a.m. until funeral services in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 p.m.  Interment will follow in Ponchatoula Cemetery.
