Gary Wayne Stewart

Gary Wayne Stewart, (69), of Livingston, Louisiana passed away on October 26, 2023, surrounded by family, after a brief illness.

Gary was born to Hannon and Lena Marzie Stewart, on April 26, 1954, in Hammond, Louisiana. Growing up, he was a star baseball and football player for Doyle High School in Livingston, and continued playing football at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.

After his time in college, where he majored in criminal justice, Gary became a police officer for the Town of Livingston. In 1984, Gary was elected as the Chief of Police for the Town of Livingston, a position he kept for 20 years. He continued as a police officer for the town up until his retirement in 2005. He didn’t really like retirement, so he started Stewart & Sons Contractors with his sons, where they did work in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.

In addition to his love for being a police officer, Gary had many hobbies he enjoyed. He coached baseball for Livingston’s Parks and Recreations Department for many years, where he also helped maintain the fields, and enjoyed teaching baseball to his own daughter, sons, nieces, nephews,and grandson. He was also a skilled woodworker, building everything from swings to cabinets, bookshelves, and much more.

Gary is survived by his children: Brandi “Bee” (Matthew) Turland, Ryan (Misty) Stewart, and Garrett Stewart. He is also survived by the grandchildren that brought so much joy to his life: Tyson, Camryn, Malin, Savannah, and Jude Stewart, and Nathaniel Turland. Other survivors include his maternal aunts: Dottie Davis and Faye Klumpp, several sister-in laws and brother-in-laws, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hannon and Lena Marzie Stewart, his brother Ronnie Stewart, his beloved nephew Lucky Stewart, his maternal aunts June Martin and Bobbie Sue Pierce, and his former wife and mother to his children, Charlotte Stafford.

Gary’s family will host a funeral service on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. The service will be at First Baptist Church in Livingston, 29401 S Frost Rd.
