Floyd Jewel Nickens

Floyd Jewel Nickens passed away on August 1, 2017 at the age of 90.  He was born on December 15, 1926 in Galvez, Louisiana.   He was a sixteen month resident of The Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Reserve, Louisiana.  At the age of six, he moved to Pumpkin Center, Louisiana.  After marriage, he became a long-time resident of Hammond, Louisiana.  As a widower, he became a 14 year resident of Albany, Louisiana.

A proud veteran of WWII, a Sergeant-medic stationed in Japan during reconstruction.  After his service in the Army, he became a skilled carpenter and a member of the local carpenters union.  He later became a heavy equipment operator and job foreman.  A self-taught man that mastered many trades.  An avid sportsman, deer hunting was his great passion.  From the swamps of Louisiana to the hills of Mississippi, he walked those woods well into his seventies.  

He is survived by his daughter, Beverly Nickens of Albany, LA; his son, Willie Johnson and wife Jana, of Ponchatoula, LA; two sisters, Tovie Ott of Aberdeen, MS and Evelyn Badon of Pumpkin Center, LA; Six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceeded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years Lois Davis Nickens; his daughter, Linda Johnson; his parents, Millard and Essie Coates Nickens Sr.; his Brothers, Millard Nickens Jr. and Matthew Nickens; his sisters, Nell Vampran and Nellie Ann Adams.

May the good Lord hold and keep you in His grace.  A good friend to many, always there to lend a helping hand, no project to big or small.  A great teacher to those willing to learn.  A selfless man that loved life, his family, and his dogs.  You will be remembered and you will be missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, August 3, 2017 from 6-9 pm at the Harry Mckneely & Son Funeral Home Chapel in Hammond, LA.  Visitation will continue on Friday, August 4, 2017 beginning at 10 am until service time at 11am in the Harry Mckneely & Son Funeral Chapel in Hammond, LA. Interment will follow in the Ford Cemetery.
