Essie Ollie Martin Penalber

Proverbs 31:10 Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.

We lost our beloved mother and the world lost an incredible giver and friend, Essie Ollie Martin Penalber, on Sunday, April, 27, 2025. Essie lived a life of service and giving to others. As a native of New Orleans and long-term resident of the Maurepas community, she was known for her willingness to listen and give to others. Those who knew and loved her know that she lived her life focused on meeting the needs of her family and others. She will be missed. Essie died in her home surrounded by her children, Tim, Eric, and David, and her very special niece Linda Farrell McKinney. She was born in New Orleans, LA on November 4, 1926. Essie’s proudest area of service was in that to her church (Maurepas Baptist) where she taught Sunday School for more than 50 years.

Essie was married to Bush Henry Penalber, Jr. for 39 years. He preceded her in death at 63 years of age in 1991. Throughout their marriage and her lifetime, she took on odd jobs to support the family, serving as a substitute teacher and bus driver, then working at the Livingston Parish Food Stamp Issuing office prior to retirement. In all of her efforts, she was a positive force who was known by her colleagues and others as a kind soul, always willing to give and offer a smile. Essie is survived by her sons, Tim, Eric (Tonya), and David. Her grandchildren, Chase Penalber, Devin Penalber, Nathan Penalber, and Joel Penalber. Her great grandchildren Kamryn Penalber, Logan Penalber, and special great Mia Penalber. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bush, infant son, William Gary Penalber, and her parents Wiley Martin, Sr. and Lena Clayton Martin, her brother Wiley Martin, Jr., sisters Lela Goff, Dora Reus, Esther Buchannan, Iola Baker, and Mary Farrell, numerous nieces and nephews.

A special thanks goes to Linda McKinney and Modern Hospice of Hammond, LA for the care provided during her illness. In honor of her wishes, Essie was laid to rest next to her husband at Maurepas Cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home and Crematory of Hammond and Ponchatoula. An on-line guest book is available at www.harrymckneely.com.
