Dr. Lawrence "Larry" H. Holmes Jr.

Dr. Lawrence "Larry" H. Holmes Jr., of Hammond, Louisiana, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at the age of 89. He was born on Wednesday, April 24, 1935, in Robert, Louisiana, the son of the late Lawrence H. Holmes Sr. and Lucille Harper Holmes.

Dr. Larry was a proud graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree, he furthered his academic journey at Louisiana State University, achieving his Ph.D. Dr. Larry lived a life dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and the nurturing of young minds during his tenure as a professor emeritus of chemistry at Southeastern Louisiana University.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Camille Moniotte Holmes, stepdaughter, Karen Monteleone (Paul), stepson, John West (Tara), grandchildren, Tuesday Monteleone (Joe), Jade Winn (Sean), Claudia Miley (Kendra), Madelyne Booth (Brennan), Schoen Holmes, and Jessica Holmes, and great-grandchildren, Chloe Winn, Patrick Winn, Paxton Winn, Kylie Pond, Jayce Burch, Phoenix Monteleone, and Celestia Newman.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Larry was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Holmes, stepdaughter, Rebecca Thornhill, and brothers, LM, Billy, and Robert Holmes.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chemistry Department at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Family and friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home - Hammond, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd, Hammond, Louisiana 70401 on Thursday, March 27, 2025, from 9:00 am until the celebration of life service begins at 11:00 am.

No more beakers, flasks, and gleam,
Of lab's bright light, a fading dream.
