Donald Joseph Haydel Jr. “Black”, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away at his home on January 27, 2024, in Hammond, Louisiana, at the age of 76. Born in New Orleans on January 8, 1948 to Donald Joseph Haydel Sr. and Nora Mae Babin Haydel.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years, Patricia Cleveland Haydel, his son Donald (Tre') Joseph Haydel III (Catherine Clesi Haydel), granddaughter Harper Loveta Haydel, grandson Clesi Cruz Haydel, and brothers and sisters Brenda H. Lacoste (Larry), Keith J. Haydel, Connie Cardella (Joseph), Vernall H. Louque, and Jamie H. Mancuso (Larry), also a 1969 disassembled Corvette that we are unsure what to do with. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy.
Black attended Destrehan High School and later devoted 30 years of his life to working at Shell Chemical in Norco. Black was known as a jack of all trades and possessed a strong work ethic that inspired those around him.
In his free time, Black delighted in spending time with his family and friends. He cherished hunting and fishing and he could always be found at his camp in Grand Isle fishing with family and cheering on the LSU Tigers or with his lifelong friends at the Miller Killer Hunting Club. He and his brother shared a love for horse racing and could often be found at The Fairgrounds. Above all, Donald cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren, creating precious memories that will be treasured forever. Donald's commitment to his faith was unwavering, and he was a proud member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church.
Family and friends will be received at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 600 North Oak Street, Hammond, Louisiana 70401 on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 from 9:00 am until the Funeral Mass begins at 11:00 am.
The family would like to extend a special message of gratitude to Compassus Hospice for their compassion and care over the last three months of his life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society or a charity of your choice. Donald held a deep belief in helping those in need and supporting the community.
Black’s life was a testament to love, generosity, and unwavering dedication. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, his memory will echo in eternity.
