Christine Pappas Andres

Mrs. James S. (Christine Pappas) Andres passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2020 in Hammond, Louisiana at the age of 98 years old.  She was born December 29, 1921 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Frank and Georgia Pappas.  She was a longtime resident of Hammond.

Christine is survived by her sister Helen Pappas of Dallas, TX, beloved nieces and nephews; two sons, Speros James “Jim” Andres (Martha) and Frank J. Andres, MD (Angel), and a daughter Julia A. Wolf (Kevin).  She has five lovely granddaughters:  Alexis Andres Angle (Randy); Katie Andres Borders (Will), Kristie Andres (Joe) Courtney Andres, DO (Jared), and Kelly Andres; and one handsome grandson, Alexander Kevin Wolf (Danielle) who had the privilege to grow up in the family home she and Dr. Andres built in 1954.  She also has 3 great grand daughters:  Olivia Christine Angle and Zoe Elizabeth Angle (Alexis), and Isabelle Ashleigh Wolf (Alex).

She was preceded in death by her husband James S. Andres, MD, her parents Frank and Georgia Pappas; brothers, Harry, George and Frank Pappas and sister Julia Pappas Theo.

Christine graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Texas in 1939 and attended Southern Methodist University studying Business at a time when it was not common for women to be offered an opportunity to attend college (true glass ceiling).  She loved fashion and was quite fond of her beautiful dresses and hats.  Very proud of her and Dr. Andres’ Greek ancestry, she spoke and wrote the Greek language fluently, and is best known locally for her contribution to the formation of Southwood Academy (Spartans) in 1968 for which she served several years as the secretary and a board member.  A reunion in 2019 of students, parents and faculty brought her great joy to attend and see the fruits of her labor.  She also held local offices as well as state and national offices in the following organizations:  Daughters of Penelope (Grand Governor) and Philoptohos Society (affiliated with the Greek Orthodox Church); Order of the Eastern Star, Order of Amaranth, Daughters of the Nile and White Shrine affiliated with the Masonic Order; Hammond Garden Club and Tangipahoa Medical Auxiliary, and a local bridge club.  She also was guest violinist in the Southeastern Louisiana University Orchestra and was an accomplished pianist.

During her husband’s life, Mrs. Andres hosted several lovely parties and was very active in the community socially.  Prior to his death she worked in her husband’s medical office in Hammond and was instrumental in reconciling his affairs at his death in 1975.  Henceforth she devoted all her energy to supporting and raising their three children.   Those children could never had had a more charmed life nor better examples of loving and responsible parents, and take comfort in the fact that the two are joined together again for all eternity.  Their union brings to mind a favorite quote from King Arthur:  Don't let it be forgot / That once there was a spot / For one brief shining moment / That was known as Camelot!

In view of the Coronavirus the funeral and viewing will be private, arrangements handled by Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home.  The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Greg Allen of Ponchatoula and the therapists with Kindred Home Health for their great efforts at keeping mom spry and mobile into her 98th year.  We also want to express our appreciation to New Century Hospice for their kind and gentle care in providing her dignity into her peaceful slumber.
