Charles "Charlie" Earl Martin

Charles "Charlie" Earl Martin, of Springfield, Louisiana, passed away at North Oaks Medical Center on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, at the age of 71. He was born on Saturday, October 15, 1949, in Hammond, Louisiana.

He was a retired safety coordinator for Dupont. Charlie enjoyed spending his time camping, taking road trips and spending quality time with his family. He served as Mayor of Springfield for many years and was currently serving as alderman.

Charlie's service to Springfield is immeasurable. He helped secure grants for numerous projects and handled the grant for the new sewer system. Charlie oversaw these projects from start to finish, including going door to door himself to register people. Along with Mayor Abels and Chief Jones, he secured funding for the new well and infrastructure involved in that project. He also mapped and documented burials in the Springfield Cemetery and submitted detailed information to the Louisiana Cemetery Board.  There are to many of Charlie's contributions to list.

Every citizen in Springfield loved and respected Mr. Charlie.

He was an active member of St. Thomas Catholic Church. He supported the church in any capacity he could and even helped maintain the lawn. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, and American Legion Post #258.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susan Abels Martin; daughter & son-in-law, Alisha Martin Stoetzner and Steven Stoetzner; sisters and brothers-in-law, Debbie Martin and Terry Vitrano, Joyce "Grandmaw" Menck and John Menk; brothers & sisters-in-law, Michael and Genie Martin, Jimmy and Barbara Martin, Johnny and Mel Martin; his grandchildren, Macy Alexis Stoetzner, Hunter Austin Stoetzner and Fisher Allen Stoetzner; also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Charles "Chucky"  Martin; parents, Eddie Earl and Eula Lee Martin; grandparents, Henry and Mary Martin, Charles and Hassie Chandler; nephews, Travis and Chad  Martin.

Family and friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd, Hammond, Louisiana 70401 on Sunday, January 31, 2021 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Visitation will continue in the funeral home chapel on Monday, February 1, 2021 from 11:00 am until 12:30 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Springfield, Louisiana on Monday at 1:00 pm, with Fr. Jamin David  officiating. Seating in church will be limited.

Interment will follow in the Springfield Cemetery.

Face masks are mandatory to attend any visitation or service and we ask that you maintain a respectful distance with the family. Thank you for your cooperation.
