A family graveside service for Carolyn Reid Husted Shelton, 93, of Ponchatoula, formerly of Monroe, LA will be held at 10 am, Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Wetmore Cemetery, Ponchatoula, with Dr. David Cranford of First Baptist Church of Ponchatoula officiating under the direction of Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, LA. Mrs. Shelton died September 15, 2016, at her Ponchatoula home with family at her side. Special thanks to her devoted sitters, especially April Jenkins and Loretta Cotton, and Heart of Hospice nurse, Brittany Traylor. Born May 25, 1923, Mrs. Shelton was the daughter of William Lindsey and Irma Belle Reid Husted, an old Ouachita Parish family. She was educated at Neville High School, Northeast Junior College and graduated from LSU in Education. In 1945, while working for Delta Airlines in Monroe, she met and married Captain Amos Raleigh Shelton, USAF of Greensboro, NC, who was stationed at Selman Field Navigational School. They had 3 children and were members of Parkview Baptist Church in Monroe. She taught children's Sunday School, worked on the Grounds Committee, and arranged Sanctuary flowers. She anonymously planted a tulip garden near the pastorâs office window, so that he could reï¬ect on something beautiful while preparing sermons. The pastor delighted in the bit of heaven on earth that the splendid tulips displayed. Her love of gardening brought her into the Monroe Garden Club, a charter member of the Monroe Garden Study League, a member of the Garden Club of America, and the Town & Country Garden Club. She was also a member of the Junior League of Monroe and Kappa Delta Sorority at LSU. After moving to Ponchatoula in 1995, she joined First Baptist Church of Ponchatoula and served on the Flower Committee. Mrs. Shelton was preceded in death by her husband, Amos; her sister, Dr. Virginia Husted Hargrove Grifï¬n; her brother, William Husted, Jr.; and a great grandchild, Maddry Grace Trahan. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include son, Robert Reid Shelton and wife, Lavern, of Lafayette; daughters, Ann Shelton Maddry and husband, David of Springï¬eld; and Jenny Shelton Bohning and husband, John, of Ponchatoula.
