Avril Daphne Jarvis Neale Font of Barry, Wales and Ponchatoula, Louisiana was born on April 10, 1941. She passed away at her home on September 6, 2023 at the age of 82. Avril is survived by her daughter, Sedley Brown, and her three grandchildren, Gwenllian, Gareth, and Wiliam. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Francis Font, Jr.
Avril earned her teaching certification from Hockerill College in Wales. She had a distinguished career as an educator in a multitude of capacities. She taught elementary students from Hong Kong, where she met Bill, to Louisiana and Wisconsin as well as fellow educators all over the world with her work with The International Baccalaureate. Avril was passionate about instilling a love of learning, especially reading, in those who had the privilege of having her as a teacher. Avril was named Louisiana Reading Council’s Reading Teacher of the Year in 1989 and Louisiana’s Elementary Teacher of the Year in 2003. She strove to bring her joy of life long learning to the residents of Hammond through her extensive work with the Chamber of Commerce Education Committee.
While Avril is most renowned for her passion regarding education, she was also an avid reader and needlework aficionado. She spent hours creating one of a kind pieces for her friends and family. Her pies were legendary. Avril’s sense of adventure and curiosity inspired her to travel the world. Avril may be best remembered as the narrator for many of our local ballet productions. Her gifts and talents were varied and remarkable.
Avril touched the lives of countless people all over the world. She inspired generations of educators, students, and friends. She will be missed by a great many.
