Anita Mae Capron

Anita Hagood-Capron passed away on Monday, April 11, 2022, in Hammond, Louisiana, at the age of 77. She was born on June1, 1944 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Odette Hymel Wagner and the late Joseph Wagner. She was a longtime resident of Hammond, Louisiana.

Anita gave a lifetime of service to communities in Southeast Louisiana, first as an educator and then as a psychotherapist. She and her younger sister, Earleen, were the first in the family to attend college. Anita earned her B.S. in Elementary Education from Loyola University in 1966, where she went on to earn her Master of Education in1977. She taught elementary special education and trained other teachers in the New Orleans Parish Schools until she found her second calling in mental healthcare.

In 1984, Anita earned her Master of Social Work degree from Tulane University; she was a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Hypnotherapist. After marrying the love of her life, Earl(“Skip”) Capron, she moved with her two children, Mack and Julia, to live with Skip in Hammond, Louisiana. In 1987, Anita and Skip founded the Psych Center, where Anita served as Clinical Director, Psychotherapist, and Educational Consultant. She helped countless people through individual, couple, family, and group therapy before retiring in 2021.

Anita cherished spending time with merchildren, grandchildren, extended family, and a small circle of good friends. She loved reading historical fiction, going to plays, and travel, though lifetime of physical disability made the latter challenging. She patiently cheered on the Powder Milk Biscuits volleyball team, but greatly preferred the after-“victory” meals.

Anita was beloved by her immediate and extended family, who often called her “Neetsy.” She is survived by Skip, her husband of 37 years; daughter, Julia Hagood White; son, Mack Hagood and his wife, Bridget; sister, Earleen Barrilleaux; and grandchildren, Riley James, Lee White, Abe Hagood, and Theo Hagood.
